Bill Marino – Managing Partner
Bill brings 25 years of communications, strategic planning, and marketing experience to his role as Managing Partner. With his experience as a CEO and serving CEOs, he brings to this capacity a deep understanding of the integral role leadership and communications play in creating a performance-oriented culture and the ultimate success of an organization. Because of this, he leads the firm in supporting client objectives to inspire its people, open new markets, craft market-moving messaging, and manage the flow of critical business information to stakeholders.
Over his career, he and his teams have worked with scores of companies, institutions, non-profit organizations and municipalities, providing counsel and board-level service to help refine strategic direction, articulate vision to target stakeholders and build programs that achieve business objectives. As a successful educator, journalist, publisher, entrepreneur, and public servant, Bill has applied his expertise for organizations from London to San Francisco to Seoul. Bill earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Language Arts Education from University of Central Florida, attended University of South Florida for graduate studies in Linguistics and Seton Hall University's Masters of Strategic Communications and Leadership Program. He is a frequent speaker on business strategies relating to strategic communications. He has been a featured speaker at the University of Colorado's Executive MBA Program, E-Commerce World Expo, NCTA's Cable2K in New Orleans, and NATA's National Conference in Tampa. He has edited 18 books and has over 200 articles to his credit in both Europe and the United States. He is active in his community, serving on the Lakewood Mayor's Committee for West Colfax Revitalization, as a two-term Planning Commissioner for the City of Lakewood, and as Chairman of the Conditions Survey Task Force, a body convened to recommend policy on the use of condemnation by the Lakewood Reinvestment Authority.
Reid Wegley - Director of Media Relations
Reid is an expert strategist on media-relations campaigns involving national business and consumer media. His extensive contact network and ability to analyze trends has landed clients in high-level media outlets, such as: ABC News, CNN, CBS News, MSNBC, NBC News, USA Today; BusinessWeek; New York Times; Forbes; Fortune; The Wall St. Journal and the Associated Press.
Over the last five years, Reid has served as the lead communicator for some of America’s greenest companies, building unique strategies and programs designed to communicate worthy climate change efforts to the media, and to position his constituents as climate change leaders on a national scale. Since 2003, clients have garnered climate change awards from National Geographic, Outside Magazine, Plenty Magazine and Treehugger, as well as from numerous industry sources.
Reid holds a BA degree in Communications/Creative Writing from Colorado State University.
Carole Piaseczny - APR, Senior Communications Counsel
With over 25 years of experience in New York City and in the Rocky Mountain Region in public relations, advertising and public affairs, Carol has provided strategic counsel and business communications services to nearly 100 companies. Her corporate, public relations and advertising leadership experience has proven valuable in leading national launches, branding and positioning and advancing the professionalism of public relations.
In the field of education, Carol launched the 15th Argosy University in Denver. Additionally, she directed the first-ever communications and public relations program for Summerbridge at Kent Denver, a year-round educational and mentoring program for 100 economically-challenged Denver Public School middle school students. Most importantly, the program's internal communications efforts secured vital and important funding and full partnership with the Kent Denver donor community.
As president of Piaseczny &Company Advertising and Public Relations for 10 years, Carol founded the first woman-owned Denver agency admitted to the prestigious American Association of Advertising Agencies, which included only 10 agency members in Colorado. She led successful national and regional programs for clients in automotive, healthcare, energy, real estate, economic development, technology, fast food, professional services and consumer goods and services which included NutriSystem, Arby's, Jeep, Brunswick, MOBIL, InterNorth (Enron), Adams County Economic Development, Adams County for Denver International Airport, Denver Mounted Patrol, Center for Hearing Speech and Language, The Children's Hospital, Stonegate, Westile, Linclay Corp., and SullivanHayes.
Earlier in her career, she held public affairs management and department leadership positions with Newsweek Magazine and is an accredited member of The Counselors Academy of the Public Relations Society of America. She holds her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from The Ohio State University and has provided pro bono PR/ marcom services to numerous nonprofits including Mile High United Way, Mile High Council of the Girl Scouts of America and the Denver Art Museum and is a member of the board of directors for Colorado Conservation Voters.
Karen Conway – Senior Communications Counsel
Karen has more than 25 years experience in public relations in agency, corporate and non-profit environments, as well as eight years in journalism. Karen's particular areas of expertise include: strategic communications and planning, crisis communications, special events, and government relations (including both lobbying and regulatory work). As director of government and public affairs of Colorado Interstate Gas Company, Karen directed all public relations, employee relations, Web site development, advertising, marketing, crisis communications and special events planning in six western states. She also handled the company's lobbying and regulatory work at the state and national level, including passage of landmark air quality and environmental cleanup legislation. Karen also led the public relations division for one of Colorado's largest advertising agencies, where she counseled clients in the healthcare, real estate, technology and tourism industries, and managed the communications efforts for Junior Achievement's national and international headquarters.
A frequent presenter on public speaking, media training and crisis communications, Karen has guided clients through difficult situations ranging from the savings and loan crisis of the mid-1980s to a natural gas explosion that shut down major thoroughfares during Denver rush hour. Karen has secured coverage in national media, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Today Show, Redbook, and Parenting magazine. Karen graduated cum laude from the Colorado College, where she studied biology and philosophy and served as general manager of Colorado's oldest non-commercial radio station.
Carole Simpson-Warner - APR, Media Relations Specialist
Carole has worked with the media for more than 15 years. She was born to be a media relations specialist. She brings a "bull dog" approach to media relations campaigns. Carole has conducted research, provided communications support services, and lead many media relations campaigns for a litany companies, including Arnold Palmer Golf, Winter Park Art Festival, Bark Busters USA, Hunter Douglas, Compaq Computer, US Homes, Exabyte, Meritage Funds, and Rockies Venture Club.
She specializes in new launches and national campaigns where her attention to detail, infectious personality, and indelible persistence make a difference in her media relations efforts. She's simply impossible to resist (or avoid). In addition, Carole has worked with many authors to promote their books - both to publishers and to the mainstream media, achieving success in both endeavors.
Carole's prior agency experience includes working for one of the largest PR agencies in Orlando as well as boutique firms in New York City. Carole and her teams have secured coverage in a host of national media outlets, including USA Today, The New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Entrepreneur, the Today Show, CBS Early Morning, WB2, KCAL, KCBS, Better Homes &Gardens, numerous trade publications, and newspapers in every top 20 U.S. media market.
Lara Urano - Director of Community Relations
As Director of Community Relations, Lara plays an integral role in all the agency's media relations campaigns, working closely with all members of the team on all SJI accounts. Her energy and enthusiasm are well suited for these high-intensity campaigns. Prior to becoming a member of the SJI team, Lara gained marketing and public relations experience as an intern with Mental Health Association of Colorado, Dora Moore Elementary School and the Murray Corn Maze. Upon receiving her undergraduate degree she spent three years with Bonfils Blood Center as a Marketing and Communications Specialist and as a Recruitment Specialist. Lara earned her B.S.B.A. in Marketing and Communications from the University of Denver and her Masters in Nonprofit Management from Regis University.
Carol Anna - Senior Writer/Communications Advisor
With more than 20 years of experience, Carol provides senior-level writing and editing services to SJI clients who are seeking to differentiate themselves with a clear and compelling voice. Her ability to grasp technical concepts, understand specialized terminology, and convey key messages effectively makes Carol adept at communicating complex concepts in ways that are easily understood by target audiences. Suzy Naschansky - Senior Web Applications Engineer
Suzy's engineering expertise includes web-based software development, systems analysis, database design, computer training and consulting. She has developed and integrated client sites implementing features such as Intranets, catalogs, payment gateways, bulletin board sites, email services and automated newsletters, contests, content management, and more. She has technical skills with a variety of databases on both UNIX/Linux and Windows platforms and several programming languages.
At SJI, Suzy is responsible for understanding user requirements, offering consultancy on solutions, and designing, developing and implementing turnkey solutions for clients, as well as ongoing maintenance and customer support for existing sites and applications. While executing a project, she makes recommendations and suggestions that are a value-add to the client's business. She ensures that our clients are not just satisfied with the work delivered, but that they also come back for repeat projects.
Before joining SJI, Suzy worked for and consulted with Mayo Medical Foundation, Exabyte, Coors, Time Warner Cable, AT&T Broadband, City of Lakewood, Chicago Tribune Charities, and two Internet start-ups. Following established processes and standards, Suzy has worked on projects that include client-server applications, custom software development, web design and web application development, web-enabling legacy systems, technical support and systems administration. She has a hard-won reputation for bringing complex, highly technical projects successfully to completion, both working individually and as part of a team of programmers.
Gary M. Mason – Art Director/Senior Creative Advisor
Gary has been an inspired innovator in the field of graphic design for more than 25 years. Founder and Creative Director of Mason &Associates, he has worked on a full spectrum of creative projects for local, national, and international clients in both two and three dimensional applications. He serves as the primary creative force for SJI. Gary plays a strategic role in determining how to best represent a company and its brand, involving development of high-level concepts that meet specific business objectives. He creates solutions for brand identity, signage, exhibits and environmental design, annual reports and brochures, package design, book design, and websites. Along with the managing partners, he is responsible for maintaining the quality of work to an agreed time and budget and ensures that creative solutions meets the requirements of the client's project brief.
Emily J. Marino – Account Coordinator / Illustrator
Emily is a graduate of Rocky Mountain College of Art &Design. At SJI, she wears several hats. As an account coordinator, she is responsible for client services and project coordination. Emily provides organizational support to our account teams. In this role, she conducts market research, manages and maintains press clippings, status reports and briefing books for press tours. She also researches editorial and speaking opportunities for our clients. Emily is also our lead illustrator. She specializes in animal art, pet portraitures, and anatomical illustrations in a variety of styles and mediums. From fanciful art to realistic medical illustrations, Emily has completed works for the agency, publishers, and private collectors for more than a decade. She has worked in the Veterinary field as a Veterinarian's assistant for more than five years and served as the Program Assistant for the Lakewood Creativity Lab.
C.Y. Choi, aia.ncarb – Business Advisor Emeritus
Mr. Choi is president and CEO of C.Y. Choi &Associates P.C. (formerly Architects &Planners International, Inc.): Architects, Planners, and Land Use Specialists engaged in consultancy to the Development Community and Jurisdictions. In addition, Mr. Choi is chairman of the Saddleback Metropolitan District, Clear Creek County, Colorado, serving a new community of 350 plus luxury homes. He serves as a special advisor to the firm on matters pertaining to real estate, community relations, and strategic planning.
With over 40 years in the Construction Industry throughout the USA and in numerous other countries, Mr. Choi has been engaged in a broad spectrum of building and planning projects, continually furthering and refining concepts such as "Built Green" and prudent resource use / allocation / management in design and construction. This consultancy to developers, financiers, and builders serves an international clientele with specific focus and expertise in the areas of Architecture, Planning, and Programme Management Overview (PMO). This comprehensive approach in PMO marshals the varying and individual characteristics of design, engineering, construction, development, financing and jurisdictional communities to be better orchestrated and synchronized, with involvement ideally beginning no later than the pre-programming stages.
